Why Functional Medicine Is So Important to Me
This weekend, one of my longtime patients had a heart attack.
I cared for him for years as a chiropractor. We worked through stress, pain, posture, life — like so many of the people I was honored to serve. He’s in his 40s. He has kids. And he never saw it coming.
And if I’m being honest… neither did I.
That’s what has been sitting heavy on my heart.
Because heart disease doesn’t usually announce itself with a dramatic warning. It often builds quietly, behind the scenes, until the day it doesn’t.
The CDC’s provisional mortality report lists heart disease as the #1 cause of death in the United States. The American Heart Association has also emphasized that heart disease remains the leading cause of death, fueled by risk factors that continue to rise.
We can’t afford to wait.
What This Confirmed for Me
Chiropractic was my lane with him, and I gave it everything I had. Functional medicine labs — a deeper layer of prevention — sat outside that lane, and I never pushed hard for them.
This is what taught me, once and for all, how important that layer is.
Because functional medicine is not just about treating illness. It’s about looking upstream — before the diagnosis, before the emergency, before the moment that changes a family forever.
I’m sharing this because I know I’m not the only practitioner who has had a moment like this — where something happens and it deepens your conviction. Not out of fear… but out of responsibility. Out of love for the people you serve.
Heart Disease Is Often Silent. But Inflammation Isn’t.
Here’s what I believe, even more strongly now:
Heart disease can be a silent killer. But inflammation is not silent.
Inflammation leaves fingerprints. It whispers for months, sometimes years. The problem is that most of us are trained to ignore the whispers until they become a scream.
Chronic inflammation can simmer for a long time, quietly affecting the body. Common symptoms can include fatigue, body pain, mood changes, digestive issues, and weight changes — often subtle enough that people normalize them.
Harvard Health also describes how chronic inflammation can show up through subtle symptoms like fatigue, joint pain, and digestive issues — often without obvious “redness and swelling.”
The 5 Ways I Commonly See Inflammation Show Up (Before Anything “Big” Happens)
If I could sit with every mom and dad, every busy professional, every person who thinks they’re “fine”, I’d start here:
Inflammation doesn’t always look like pain.
It often looks like:
1) Fatigue that doesn’t match your life
Not “I slept poorly” tired — more like “I wake up tired” tired. Chronic inflammation is commonly associated with persistent fatigue.
2) Brain fog
Difficulty concentrating, feeling mentally cloudy, not as sharp as you used to be. Chronic inflammation can produce cognitive and mood-related symptoms over time.
3) Digestive issues
Bloating, constipation, diarrhea, reflux — things that people live with for years and call “normal.” Digestive problems are frequently listed among common chronic inflammation symptoms.
4) Joint or muscle aches/stiffness
Especially stiffness that’s worse in the morning or after sitting. Joint pain and stiffness are common chronic inflammation patterns.
5) Mood changes / irritability
Many people don’t realize inflammation can impact mood and emotional resilience over time. Mood changes like depression or anxiety are included among commonly cited symptoms of chronic inflammation.
These symptoms don’t mean you’re “broken.”
They mean your body is communicating.
And they’re often the early signs that we should be looking deeper.
What I Push For Now
Baseline cardiometabolic labs, earlier and for more people — especially a dad in his 40s with a busy life and a body under stress.
Because functional medicine gives us an opportunity to see things that basic, symptom-driven care can miss.
Not because conventional medicine isn’t valuable — it saves lives every single day.
But because prevention requires a different lens.
A root-cause lens.
A “what’s brewing beneath the surface” lens.
Why I’m Focused on Functional Medicine Now (Especially for Families)
This is personal for me.
Florida summers are intense. The heat, humidity, dehydration, stress, travel, sugar, alcohol — many of the things that rise in summer can increase strain on the body’s inflammatory and cardiometabolic systems.
And when life is busy, it’s easy to miss the signs.
That’s why I’m leaning into functional medicine with a deeper purpose now: because I don’t want another family blindsided.
I want to help people identify risk early. I want to help them build resilience. I want to give them a plan they can actually follow.
If You’re Reading This and You’ve Been “Fine”… Please Hear Me
If you’ve been tired.
If your digestion has been off.
If you’ve felt puffy, inflamed, or foggy.
If you’ve been pushing through and telling yourself you’ll deal with it later —
This is your reminder that later isn’t promised.
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the U.S., and the risk factors that drive it — like high blood pressure and obesity — continue to rise.
And while you can’t control everything, you can get curious sooner.
You can check your baseline.
You can look for inflammation markers.
You can find out what your body has been trying to say.
Ask your doctor for baseline cardiometabolic labs — while you feel okay, not after something forces the question.
Final Thought
This blog is not about guilt. It’s about awakening.
I care deeply about the people I served — and this reminded me that prevention is not optional.
Heart disease may be silent.
But inflammation is not.
And from this point forward, I’m choosing to listen sooner.
