Raising Them Well

Teaching to a New Standard: Our First Homeschool Year

By Dr. Karen West · August 2026

This fall, our kitchen table became a classroom.

2026 is our first year homeschooling our four children. We pulled them out of private school to do it — and I want to explain why, because it is the same reason behind everything else my husband and I have ever built.

Held to our standard

In our family, we run companies and we have run practices, and the rule has always been the same: whatever we put our name on gets held to the highest standard we can manage. Not the most convenient one. Not the average one. The highest one.

When we looked honestly at our children’s education, we asked the question we ask about everything else: is this being done to our standard? And the truthful answer was that we could do better — not because their school was failing, but because nobody will ever hold our children’s learning to a higher standard than we will.

What we’re teaching, and why

I want my kids to be ready for whatever they choose to do — not for one path we’ve picked out for them, but for their choice, whatever it turns out to be. And a strong education is the foundation of that freedom:

  • Science — how to observe, question, and test, not just memorize
  • Math — the discipline of getting it actually right
  • Language — reading deeply and writing clearly, because clear writing is clear thinking
  • The arts — because a full life needs beauty, and making things teaches what consuming things never will

Fifteen years of teaching prepared me for this

Here is what surprised me least. I have spent my whole career teaching — explaining to grown adults how their bodies work, in plain language, until the lightbulb comes on. Patients in the treatment room, clients at the spa, and now anyone who finds this site or the channel.

Teaching four children how the world works is not a career change. It is the same calling with smaller chairs. The same rules apply: no jargon, no fear, no shortcuts. Meet the student where they are. Build the foundation before the flourish. Hold the standard even when it would be easier not to.

Raised on real food, raised on real learning

We raised our children on real food from their first days — not as an experiment, but as a standard. Homeschooling is the same decision in a different room. What goes into a growing mind matters the way what goes onto a growing plate does, and we are done outsourcing either one below our standard.

I’ll share what we learn along the way — the honest version, including the days it goes sideways. If you’re a parent weighing the same decision, I hope our year one is useful to you.
